In this blog post, I will share how to get rid of keratosis pilaris. Keratosis pilaris/chicken skin is rough and bumpy skin that kind of resembles goosebumps. They tend to be worse when it’s cold. It’s also more common in women than males. I always had keratosis pilaris on my upper arms but I never knew what it was called. So I consulted my dermatologist about it and that’s when she told me it’s keratosis pilaris. However, I have found some things that have helped improve my keratosis pilaris.

Is Keratosis Pilaris itchy?

Yes, keratosis pilaris can be itchy but it’s usually not too bad. The best way to reduce the itch is to keep the skin moisturized. Don’t scratch as this will aggravate the skin further.

Keratosis Pilaris on Arms

You can get keratosis pilaris in a lot of areas of your body. For me, I only have it on my upper arms. I often find myself wearing jackets a lot as my arms get colder easily. Regardless of where you have KP on your body it’s all treated the same way.

Keratosis Pilaris Treatment

While keratosis pilaris can never be gone for good you can get rid of it by taking care of it. Exfoliation is helpful for getting rid of KP as it removes the dead skin cells. This will also help with improving the skin texture. You also want to make sure your skin is always moisturized. Below are some products that have helped me with the treatment of keratosis pilaris.

Lotion for Keratosis Pilaris

There are some products on the market that are specifically for KP like the First Aid Beauty KP Smoothing Body Lotion and DermaDoctor KP Duty Dermatologist Formulated AHA Moisturizing Therapy and I have yet to try these products yet but they are both lotions designed for KP. Personally, I recommend First Aid Beauty as I have always had a good experience using their products. I have never used DermaDoctor but it looks good too. The lotions I tried have ingredients that are beneficial for KP but are not designed for KP. I tried these lotions because they’re available at your drugstores and are more affordable than the KP-designed lotions. You can read more about those below.

Sol De Janerio also released a new body cream called Bom Dia Bright Body Cream. This cream says it helped people with KP. Although I haven’t tried this I love the Sol De Janerio bum bum cream so this one is probably amazing too! (Yes it’s actually called that 😂)

Good Body Scrub for Keratosis Pilaris

Mini size of First Aid Beauty KP Bump Eraser Body Scrub

Before I used to use pretty much any body scrub on my KP and I found that it helped since exfoliating makes your skin smoother. Recently I came across the First Aid Beauty KP Bump Eraser Body Scrub and many people seem to swear by this stuff. No wonder it’s the brand’s best-selling product!

I gave it a try and found that it was quite different from other body scrubs. The particles are very fine and you don’t need a lot of product. I use this on Mondays and Thursdays as you can only use this once or twice a week. I noticed that my skin felt more matte immediately after using this product. But other than that I felt no immediate results. It took a few weeks for me to notice the difference in smoothness in my skin. It has AHA which will help with exfoliation. But give it a few weeks to notice results and make sure you are following a schedule to using it.

Is Amlactin lotion good for Keratosis Pilaris?

This was the first lotion I bought to get rid of my keratosis pilaris and I finished the entire bottle. I bought the Amlactin Rapid Relief Restoring Lotion. This has lactic acid in it which will help with your chicken skin. My main concern about this was that it smelled bad (kind of like cows) but eventually I got used to it. With regular usage of using the product twice a day I found that my skin was smoother and my KP improved.

Is Cerave SA lotion good for keratosis pilaris?

The CeraVe SA Body Lotion for Rough and Bumpy Skin was something I bought when I was running low on Amlactin since Amlactin was out of stock at Target so I decided to give this a shot. It’s slightly more expensive than Amlactin but there’s not a significant difference in pricing.

Overall summary for treating KP

KP will never go away permanently but you can treat it to decrease it. Make sure you keep your skin moisturized using the right lotions that will also exfoliate while moisturizing. Also, use a body scrub weekly to help with the exfoliation, and most importantly don’t pick at the skin or scratch.
